Single-mode fiber optic jumper transmission distance: single-mode fiber optic cable can transmit 64 40G Ethernet channels, and the maximum transmission distance is 2840 miles. Single-mode fiber is mainly composed of core cladding and cladding; the core is made of highly transparent material; the refractive index of the cladding is slightly smaller than that of the core, resulting in an optical waveguide effect, so that most of the electromagnetic field must be transmitted in the core .
What is the difference between single mode fiber and multimode fiber?
1. Refractive index difference:
Most single-mode fibers use a stepped index profile. Multimode fiber can use step index profile or gradient index profile; therefore, silica fiber can generally adopt multimode step index fiber, multimode gradient index fiber and single mode step index fiber.
2. Different transmission methods:
Carrier-grade single-mode fiber patch cables can only transmit one mode at a given operating wavelength, while multimode fiber can transmit multiple modes. The propagation of electromagnetic waves such as light in optical fibers belongs to the dielectric circular waveguide. When the light is completely reflected at the interface of the medium, the electromagnetic wave is confined in the medium, which is called guided wave or guided mode. Under a given guided wave and working wavelength, there are various incident conditions that satisfy the total reflection condition, which are called different guided wave modes. According to the transmission mode, it is divided into multimode fiber and single mode fiber.

3. The difference in transmission distance:
The transmission distance and transmission bandwidth of single-mode fiber are obviously caused by multimode fiber. If the transmission distance is greater than 5 kilometers, single-mode fiber can transmit large broadband data signals for the longest time in the application. If the transmission distance is only a few kilometers, multimode is the best choice, because LED transmitter/receiver requires more lasers than singlemode, so it is much cheaper.
4. The wavelength of optical fiber transmission is different:
The core diameter of the carrier-grade single-mode fiber jumper is very small, and it can only transmit in a single mode at a given working wavelength, with wide transmission frequency and large transmission capacity. The transmission performance of multimode fiber is poor.
