OM3/OM4 fiber optic jumper

Updated on Sun Aug 24 2025

Optical fiber technology was originally developed for data center applications, and from the perspective of current development, it will soon become an ideal choice for building backbone networks.

With the development and application of wireless technology, the horizontal wiring bandwidth in commercial and industrial buildings has exceeded 1Gbps, and the subsequent requirement is that the backbone infrastructure of integrated wiring supports at least 40Gbps and 100Gbps speeds. This means that the promotion of high-density applications in data centers is very suitable for the current development and needs. Optical fiber OM5 broadband can not only support 802.11ac wi-fi system, but also support high-density 5G wireless network.

OM5 fiber optic jumper

Basic knowledge of high-density OM5 fiber

OM5 broadband multimode optical cable: the attenuation is reduced from 3.5 dB/km of the previous OM3 and OM4 optical cables to 3.0 dB/km, and the bandwidth requirement on the 953nm wavelength is increased. The geometry of OM5 (50μm core, 125μm cladding) is the same as that of OM3 and OM4, so it is backward compatible with these types of fibers.

OM5 fiber supports future 400G Ethernet at the same time. For higher speed 400G Ethernet applications such as 400G Base-SR4.2 (4 pairs of fibers with 2 wavelengths, each channel uses 50G PAM4) or 400G Base-SR4.4 ((4 For 4 wavelengths of fiber, each channel uses 25GNRZ), only 8 cores of OM5 fiber are required. OM5 fiber is a laser-optimized multimode fiber (MMF), which specifies bandwidth characteristics for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). The purpose of this new fiber classification method is to provide support for multiple "short" wavelengths between 850nm and 950nm, which are suitable for high bandwidth applications after aggregation.

What is the difference between OM5 fiber optic jumper and OM3/OM4 fiber jumper?

1. Outer sheath color: Generally speaking, the outer sheath color of OM3 and OM4 optical fiber jumpers is turquoise or purple, while the outer sheath color of OM5 optical fiber jumper is water green.

2. Wavelength: The working wavelength of OM5 fiber patch cord is 850/1300nm, and it can support at least 4 wavelengths. The usual operating wavelengths of OM3 and OM4 are 850nm and 1300nm. In the same wavelength window, the transmission distance of this multimode fiber jumper is also different.

3. Effective mode bandwidth (EMB): OM5 fiber patch cord has a higher breakthrough in effective mode bandwidth (EMB), which increases the effective mode bandwidth (EMB) at 850nm wavelength to 6000MHZ.km, near 880nm wavelength It even reaches 8000MHZ.km, which far exceeds the traditional OM3 and OM4 multimode fiber patch cords.

What are the advantages of OM5 fiber optic jumpers?

High recognition: OM5 fiber optic patch cord was originally issued by the Communications Industry Association as TIA-492AAAE, and was unanimously approved in the ANSI/TIA-568.3-D revision opinion collection issued by the American National Standards Institute;

Strong scalability: OM5 fiber patch cords can combine shortwave wavelength division multiplexing (SWDM) and parallel transmission technology in the future, and only need 8-core broadband multimode fiber (WBMMF) to support 200/400G Ethernet application;

Cost reduction: OM5 optical fiber jumper draws on the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology of single-mode fiber, which extends the available wavelength range for network transmission, and can support 4 wavelengths on 1-core multimode fiber. The number is reduced to 1/4 of the previous one, which greatly reduces the wiring cost of the network;

Strong compatibility and interoperability: OM5 fiber jumper can support traditional applications like OM3 fiber jumper and OM4 fiber jumper, and it is fully compatible with OM3 and OM4 fiber jumper and has strong interoperability.
