Optical fiber is the abbreviation of optical fiber, which is a kind of light guiding tool, which is realized by the principle of total reflection in the optical fiber made of glass or plastic.

What are the advantages of fiber optics?

1. Frequency bandwidth

The width of the frequency band represents the size of the transmission capacity. The higher the carrier frequency, the greater the signal bandwidth that can be transmitted.

2. Low loss

In a system consisting of coaxial cables, when transmitting signals at 800 MHz, the best cable has a loss of more than 40 dB per kilometer. In contrast, the loss of optical fiber is much smaller, the loss per kilometer is less than 0.35dB when transmitting 1310um light, and the loss per kilometer is even smaller when transmitting 1550um light, which can reach 0.2dB.

3. Light weight

Because the optical fiber is very thin, the diameter of the single-mode gigabit fiber jumper core is generally 4um~10um, and the outer diameter is only 125um. With waterproof layer, reinforcing rib, sheath, etc., the diameter of the cable is from 4~48. The diameter of the optical fiber is less than 13mm, which is far smaller than the diameter of the standard coaxial cable of 47mm. In addition, the optical fiber is glass fiber and has a small specific gravity, so it has the characteristics of small diameter, light weight, and convenient installation.

4. Strong anti-interference ability

Since the basic component of optical fiber is quartz, it only transmits light, does not conduct electricity, and is not affected by electromagnetic fields. The transmitted optical signal is not affected by electromagnetic fields, so optical fiber transmission has a strong ability to resist electromagnetic interference. Therefore, the signal transmitted in the optical fiber is not easy to be eavesdropped, which is conducive to confidentiality.
