Single-mode fiber optic splitter and multimode fiber optic splitter

Updated on Sun Aug 24 2025

Single-mode fiber splitter and multi-mode fiber splitter, fiber optic splitter is a fiber optic passive device that splits/combines optical signals, and generally splits or combines optical signals of the same wavelength. According to the different arrangement of fiber optic splitter ports, it can be divided into symmetrical star splitter and asymmetrical tree splitter; according to the type of fiber, it can be divided into single-mode fiber splitter and multi-mode fiber splitter; According to the bandwidth, it can be divided into narrowband fiber optic splitter and broadband fiber optic splitter. According to the production method, the common ones are fused tapered (FBT) splitters and planar light guide (PLC) splitters.

Types of Fiber Splitters

Common packaging forms of fiber optic splitter products:

Modular encapsulation The usual modular encapsulation forms of FBT and PLC splitters are:

rack mount

tray packaging

Instructions and precautions for the use of fiber optic splitters:

Preparations before use:

a. Prepare anhydrous alcohol and dust-free wipe paper.

b. If conditions permit, a portable fiber optic magnifier (at least 200 times) can be prepared for engineering use. c. Spare some related standard tests and standard adapters.

d. Wear clean finger cots when possible.

PLC Optical Splitter

Precautions during use:

a. After unpacking the product, check whether the product is damaged.

b. Check whether the product channel has dust-proof protective equipment.

c. Select the corresponding fiber optic connector connection according to the product model. Fiber optic connector end faces should be cleaned prior to connection. When cleaning, spread alcohol-soaked wiping paper (at least 3 layers) on the tabletop. When wiping, wipe in one direction along the angle of the ceramic surface, and do not wipe back and forth to prevent damage to the end surface.

d. After cleaning, distinguish the input and output ports, then remove the dust-proof device of the product to be used, and assemble the connector. Pay attention to the following conditions during installation (take SC type as an example): Install the connector so that the key face of the connector is consistent with the notch face of the adapter, and then insert it horizontally along the adapter. When you hear the "click" sound, then observe whether the white line on the connector is flush with the side line of the adapter. If it is flush, it means that the card is locked in place.

Then connect the input end and each output end to the test system in turn to determine whether the optical indicators meet the requirements. If it is another type of connector, it needs to be installed in place according to the actual model.

Handling of common problems with fiber optic splitters:

A certain channel or all channels at the output end are abnormal. This is the most common problem. Usually, the splitter part is less likely to be defective, and it is mainly concentrated on the connector part, and the connector is mainly concentrated on the fiber end face. The general processing methods at the production site are: Use a special wipe stick dipped in alcohol to clean the end faces of the sleeve and the internal connector. Also clean the connectors of the test leads and test again.

After passing the test, install the cleaned dust cap on the adapter. Plug the spare channels or unused channel holes on the rack or tray with silicone plugs or adapters to prevent dust from entering.

General technical indicators of fiber optic splitter:

Identification of fiber optic splitter (connector type) connectors:

(1) FC type fiber optic connector: circular, metal material, screw-in method, usually FC/PC and FC/APC type.

(2) SC fiber optic connector type: square, plastic material, plug-in fixing method, usually SC/PC and SC/APC types.

(3) ST type fiber optic connector type: circular, metal material, bayonet type fixing method, usually ST/PC type.

(4) LC type fiber optic connector: square, plastic material, plug-in fixing method, usually LC/PC and LC/APC types.

(5) MU-type optical fiber connector: square, plastic material, plug-in fixing method, usually MU/PC type.

(6)MT-RJ type optical fiber connector: square, plastic material, plug-in fixing method, usually MT-RJ type.
