How to Splice Loose Socket Fiber

Updated on Sun Aug 24 2025

I often receive calls from many friends who splice optical fibers, saying that in the project, the fiber to pigtail (jumper), pigtail to pigtail, and pigtail to pigtail will fail to splice the fiber; or there will be a large loss, but the figure The phenomenon of thinning appears. Replaced with fiber-to-fiber fusion splicing is normal. Including the use of imported welding machines, there are also the above problems.

Spliced loose sleeve pigtail

1. If you identify loose pigtails:

After checking this type of pigtail, we found that there are two styles of pigtails on the market, which we call loose pigtails and tight pigtails.

If it is loose between the sheath and the coating, it is called a loose pigtail, and if it is fastened between the sheath and the coating, it is called a tight pigtail. Now basically all splitters on the market are loose sleeve type; some jumpers are also loose sleeve type;

2. How to splice the loose sleeve pigtail:

1. When splicing tight sleeve pigtails, the pressure plate of the fusion splicer is pressed against the sheath shown in the picture, because the sheath and the coating layer are fastened, so when the pressure plate drives the sheath to move, the optical fiber also moves. Can complete welding;

2. When splicing loose sleeve pigtails, please strip the sheath a little longer, let the pressure plate press on the coating layer instead of the sheath, and the problem will be solved;

Note: let the pressure plate press the coating layer, not the bare fiber inside. So just pay a little attention when stripping the fiber.
