Advantages of pre-embedded optical fiber quick connection

Updated on Mon Aug 18 2025

The full name of quick connection is fiber optic quick connector. Quick connectors are generally divided into two categories: mechanical type and heat capacity type, and mechanical type is divided into embedded type and straight-through type.

Embedded fiber optic quick connector

The pre-embedded optical fiber quick connection is to embed a section of optical fiber inside the connector from the ferrule to the V-groove. During construction, insert the fiber core of the optical cable that needs to be quickly terminated into the V-shaped groove, so that the V-shaped groove and supporting liquid can pass through. Fiber docking.

The main types of embedded quick connectors are SC (UPC, APC), FC (UPC, APC), LC (UPC, APC).

Straight-through fiber optic quick connector

Straight-through fiber optic quick connector is to pass the stripped and cut optical fiber directly from the end of the connector body to the top of the ferrule, without other connection points inside.

There are SC (UPC), FC (UPC), LC (UPC) and other types of straight-through quick connections.

Fiber Connector

Hot melt fiber optic quick connector

The hot-melt optical fiber quick connector also pre-embeds the optical fiber from the ferrule to the connector. This optical fiber is fused with the optical fiber in the connector, which is equivalent to the end of the pigtail, but the fusion point is protected to the connector. middle. During construction, remove the tail sleeve of the connector, strip and cut the exposed tight-sleeved optical fiber, and then use an optical fiber fusion splicer to fuse it with the optical cable core to be terminated.

The types of hot melt quick connectors are SC (UPC, APC) and FC (UPC, APC).

Comparison of advantages and disadvantages

From the above introduction to the three connectors, we can see their advantages and disadvantages:

1. Hot-melt fast connection is the same as traditional optical fiber fusion, which requires an optical fiber fusion splicer to perform fusion, which is no essential difference from traditional hot-melt. Therefore, the convenience of operation has not been greatly improved, so there are fewer applications of this shortcut now.

For the straight-through quick connector, since the optical fiber is directly inserted into the top of the quick connector, and the cutting surface of the optical fiber is the end face, the quality and length of the fiber cutting are very strict, otherwise the performance will be affected. In addition, the inner diameter of the ferrule is very closely matched to the outer diameter of the fiber. A ferrule ID that is too large or too small can cause the fiber to wobble within the ferrule or not pass through at all. Therefore, this fast connection method is less used now.

2. Pre-embedded quick connection solves the problem of direct quick connection. A small length of optical fiber is pre-embedded from the ferrule to the connector body. Fibers and ferrules are preconditioned before leaving the factory. The performance of wire connectors is basically the same. And because it is connected by matching liquid, the assembly operation requirements are not so strict. Moreover, compared with the heat-capacity quick-connect, it does not require thermal fusion, has a pure passive structure, is easy to operate, has simple tools, and is easy to carry.

From the above introduction, we can see that compared with the other two types of quick connectors, the pre-embedded quick connector has the advantages of simple quick connector operation and fast construction speed; no special requirements for the working environment, passive construction; simple tools, easy to carry, etc. advantage.
