Parallel fiber-based MPO connectors have become popular because they provide fast pre-terminated cabling applications.

Multimode Fiber Cabling

Multimode fiber remains the primary choice for most enterprise data centers because it is relatively inexpensive compared to singlemode fiber. In addition, SWDM4 and the new optical fiber OM5 will be able to support longer-distance transmission and expand the application range of multimode optical fiber.

Multimode fiber is a way to achieve high-speed network transmission, such as 40GBASESR4. Another method is to create a channel in a pair of fibers through WDM. One of the challenges of networks with high mobility is the lack of space. To meet the demands of high-density fiber, more and more network designers are using MPO connectors.


LC duplex ports can be replaced with MPO ports when needed, so MPO connectors can support up to 12 times more networks than LC connectors since MPOs are available in 8, 12 and 24 fiber versions.

MPO LC

The MPO 12-core connector is a recognized single-mode and multi-mode standard MPO port that has existed for decades and is widely used in backbone network applications. Since QSFP applications do not use all 12F jumpers in the MPO connector, the center 4 pins of the MPO 12-pin connector are not used to mate with the QSFP 8 port.

The MPO 24-pin connector is probably the most cost-effective way to apply duplex and parallel optics, providing 24 pins in one connector, higher density than 3 MPO 8-pin or 2 MPO 12-pin connectors, and saving Inspection time when cleaning and installing MPO systems.


Compared with MPO-8-core or MPO-12-core systems, MPO-24 systems are more widely used in parallel applications. 100G SR-10 applications require multimode fiber in a 10piar 10x10G configuration, which some vendors extend to 12x10G switch ports. The MPO-24 core is well suited for these 100G and 120G applications.
